Repairs: Peddar Road to be one-way for 25 days

The traffic at the Peddar Road will be made one-way from Sunday for the coming 25 days to allow replacements of the old and dilapidated sewerage lines.

The traffic at the Peddar Road will be made one-way from Sunday for the coming 25 days to allow replacements of the old and dilapidated sewerage lines.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will undertake the repair work between Gamadia and Mahalaxmi junction,as part of its effort to prevent the Peddar Road from flooding in the coming monsoon and avoid a mishap.

The repair work,on the 250 meter stretch,is scheduled in a way that it completes before the onset of rainy season. Officials said that the sewer lines are more than 100 years old and have already collapsed twice in the past. “Closing Peddar Road — one of the busiest and most important road—¿ for traffic was becoming almost impossible. But the situation under it is so bad that the road could have caved in anytime. So,the work had to be carried out now,” said deputy municipal commissioner (D Ward) Chandrashekhar Chore.

It will take around four weeks to replace the old sewer lines with new ones. And for the purpose, the northbound traffic from Peddar Road will be closed till the work is over.

The vehicles will only be allowed to go southwards in the suburbs. The civic body will, however, provide stickers to the residents of the Peddar Road allowing them access to the road for parking and going northwards.

Civic officials said that to make the one-way route easier for commuters, there will be signages displayed across the Peddar Road depicting routes and no entry.

Alternative routes
The alternative route to go towards suburbs will be: Maharshi Karve Marg from Churchgate Station,Pandita Ramabai Marg from Wilson College and P D’Mello Road. B G Kher Road from Teen Batti to Kemp’s Corner and L D Ruparel Road from B G Kher Road to Napean Sea Road will be made one way along with Bhausaheb Hire Marg from its junction of Napean Sea upto B G Kher Road. Commuters wanting to go to South Mumbai on Manav Mandir Road and Ratilal Thakkar Road will not be allowed to take a right turn towards Teen Batti and will have to take a the left towards Hanging Gardens and take a U-turn under the Kemps Corner Bridge.
