According to officials, over 4,325 abandoned vehicles have been identified across the city until Tuesday since the launch of its drive earlier this month.
The scrap vehicles are being identified by external agencies, which have been roped in by the civic body to scour the roads for broken or scrapped vehicles which appear in a dilapidated state.
The drive comes along the heels of the directives issued by civic chief, Bhushan Gagrani, to ease transportation in the metropolis by clearing obstacles. The BMC has appointed three contractors each for three city divisions.
Records show that the highest number of abandoned vehicles have been recovered in the western suburbs wherein over 2,050 scrapped vehicles have been identified. Meanwhile, 1,440 dilapidated vehicles have been identified in the eastern suburbs of which at least 740 vehicles have been towed. In the island city division, meanwhile, only 833 scrapped vehicles have been identified of which 147 have been towed.
Of the total abandoned vehicles identified, the BMC has served notices to 3,153 vehicle owners, under section 314 of the MMC Act, 1888, directing them to remove the vehicles. As per the norms, the owners have to remove the vehicles within 72 hours of the notice, failing which the BMC is entitled to tow the vehicles.
