Andheri suicides: Police add rape charge against accused

On February 20, siblings, both employed as domestic help, hanged themselves at the latter’s residence.

The Oshiwara police investigating the Andheri suicides, on Friday, added charges of rape against the arrested accused, Tinku Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment by one of the four deceased in her suicide note as well as in her video-recorded suicide message.

The charge was added by investigators even though the 25-year-old woman’s suicide note and video-recorded suicide message did not allege rape. The initial post-mortem report also did not find any injuries on her.

On February 20, the siblings, both employed as domestic help with Tinku Singh’s family, hanged themselves at the latter’s residence. Her suicide note alleged sexual harassment by Singh.

The subsequent afternoon, the siblings’ mother and her live-in partner (also her employer) were also found to have hanged themselves in their Andheri residence. Police inquiries indicated a suicide pact between the four.

Singh, arrested on February 21, was produced in the Andheri metropolitan magistrate’s court on Friday. His police custody was extended till March 4.

The police said the charge of rape was added on the ground that the deceased woman’s post-mortem examination report established intercourse, though not immediately before her death. Singh also admitted to having kissed her, the police said.

“We are now probing whether Singh had raped the woman,” said a police officer from the Oshiwara police station.

A relative of the accused, however, said, “Singh could not have forced himself upon her. There is no evidence. He has the mind of a child and is innocent.”
