(Express Archives)Security has been stepped up outside the Reserve Bank of India’s office in South Mumbai after it received a threat call on Saturday from a person claiming to be from Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The Mumbai Police have registered a first information report (FIR) following a complaint by Sachin Gosavi, the security guard posted at the RBI office, and started an investigation.
According to police sources, at around 11.00 am on Saturday, the customer care centre of RBI, which is inside the building, received a phone call from an unknown mobile number with the caller issuing a threat.
“I am Lashkar-e-Taiba CEO. Bank band kar do! (shut the bank) electric car crash,” the caller said. The mobile number of the unknown caller is saved as Sanjeev Kumar on Truecaller.
The customer care staff immediately informed the supervisor and security in-charge, following which the Mumbai police control room were informed.
Besides the local police, crime branch officials are also carrying out a parallel investigation. Police suspect the call to be a hoax as the caller also reportedly sang a song after giving the threats, sources said.
The police have registered a case against the mobile number user under Sections 351(3), 351(4), 353(1)(E) and 353(2) of Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), a police officer said.
Lashkar-e-Taiba had carried out the 2008 Mumbai attack. Its leader Zakir Rehman Lakhavi is in a Pakistan prison.
