Rain returns to Mumbai after long break, IMD issues yellow alert

Data furnished by the IMD showed that the city’s Colaba coastal station registered 24 mm of rainfall, while the Santacruz observatory recorded 17 mm of rainfall between Sunday and Monday mornings.

According to the meteorological department, Mumbai is expected to witness light to moderate showers on Monday. The intensity of the rain is expected to gather pace later in the week, with heavy showers on the cards for isolated pockets between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Due to heavy rain, the IMD has issued a yellow alert in Mumbai from Monday to Wednesday. A yellow warning has been issued in Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts until Friday. Meanwhile, amid the possibility of very heavy rain in isolated pockets, an orange alert (be prepared) has been sounded in Thane and Palghar on Wednesday.

So far, the city has logged only 190 mm of rain in the month of September, while the actual average rainfall quota for the month stands at 360 mm. Since the monsoon’s onset in June, the Santacruz station has registered 2,622.5 mm of rainfall overall.

On Monday morning, the total stock in the seven lakes supplying potable water to the metropolis touched 97.96 per cent (14.17 lakh million litres) of the total capacity. Due to the low intensity of rainfall, the total water stock in the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai has slightly decreased. The lake levels reached 97.96 per cent on Monday morning. On the same date last year and in 2022, the water stock was over 98 per cent.
