Rahul’s remarks on EC in Boston undermining democracy: Fadnavis

“It is very sad and unfortunate that Rahul Gandhi was using foreign land to undermine democracy by making wild allegations against the ECI. It also amounts to insulting the Constitution which is integral to India,” Fadnavis said.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of “undermining democracy” by making allegations against the Election Commission of India during his visit to the US.

“It is very sad and unfortunate that Rahul Gandhi was using foreign land to undermine democracy by making wild allegations against the ECI. It also amounts to insulting the Constitution which is integral to India,” Fadnavis told mediapersons in Mumbai.

On Sunday, while addressing the Indian diaspora in Boston, the Congress leader had alleged that the Election Commission in India was “compromised,” stating that there was something fundamentally wrong with the system.

Citing the example of Maharashtra Assembly elections held last year, Rahul had said, “The Election Commission gave us a voting figure for 5:30 p.m. And between 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm, 65 lakh voters voted, which is physically impossible to happen,” he said.

“When we asked them for the videography, ” he argued, “they not only refused but also changed the law so that now we are not allowed to ask for the videography.”

In the Maharashtra polls, BJP-led Mahayuti got a landslide victory winning 230 seats, while the Maha Vikas Aghadi, of which Congress is a constituent, won just 46 seats.

While dismissing Rahul’s charges as baseless, Fadnavis said, “ We understand Rahul Gandhi is frustrated because of repeated defeats of the Congress. So, his outburst shows the frustration… Instead of making false allegations, he should go to the people and earn their trust. Only then can he win the elections.”
