Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Jitendra Awhad on Tuesday said that the producer of film The Kerala Story should be hanged in public for “spreading hatred” in the society, even as Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis watched the film at his hometown, Nagpur.

The film has been accused by non-BJP parties of spreading falsehoods regarding conversion of women to Islam in Kerala and their migration abroad to join the ISIS.

“The Kerala Story is nothing but an attempt to spread propaganda against a community and a particular state. The claims of over 32,000 women being made victim of ISIS are absolutely fake and the producer has accepted the same in front of the court. What kind of sick and communal mind the makers have. It is planned to spread hatred in the society. People like him (the producer of the film) should be hanged in public,” Awhad told The Indian Express, adding it was his “emotional outburst” when he said that the producer should be hanged in public.

“Under the name of The Kerala Story, a state and its women were defamed… It is a manifestation of patriarchal mindset of the filmmaker who is portraying Hindu women in bad light,” said Awhad.

Directed by Sudipto Sen, The Kerala Story revolves around a group of Kerala women newly converted to Islam joining the ISIS. After facing questions over a claim in its trailer that 32,000 women from Kerala had been recruited by the terror outfit, the producers brought this down to three and later agreed to drop the trailer.

Fadnavis who watched the film told reporters that it “exposes the dark reality”. “It is not just a film but a medium of awareness. The exploitation of innocent girls and women who are subjected to hardships is shocking and a reality,” he said.

Meanwhile, production head of the movie purportedly received a threat message on his mobile phone, prompting the Mumbai Police to provide security at his office in suburban Andheri, an official said on Tuesday.
