Pop Tribute

A set of digital paintings feature a panoply of Bollywood icons as an ode to the centenary year of Indian cinema.

She started her career as a web designer at a Bollywood portal, moved to designing projects for Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, and later pursued her artistic interests in the form of paintings, pottery and printmaking. Although diverse, the three essential aspects of Shailja Gupta’s life — technology,Bollywood and art — converge in her latest project,“Glimpses— 100 years of Indian Cinema”,a set of

digital paintings.

She took to the medium because she was comfortable with it,irrespective of the fact that digital painting isn’t fully recognised as an art form. “The artistic value of digital art is debated, but the creations are not randomly put together. Like paintings, the aspects of texture and colours apply here too,” says the 38-year-old artist over phone from the US. She is currently handling Khan’s company operations there. The project features digital avatars of 150 Bollywood stars in their respective iconic poses.

If an artist is said to have the licence to express oneself,Gupta does that as a loving ode to a world she has worshipped and admired. One may question the creativity in her work,as the figures are replications of the original. For instance,Raj Kapoor in his Chaplinesque pose,Amitabh Bachchan inclined on a chair as he gazes intensely into the camera,or Khan’s famous pose with his arms wide open.

Gupta believes what is iconic should not be touched. “It is a tribute. The idea is to stay true to their personalities and bring them across through colours. In the case of villains such as Amrish Puri and Gulshan Grover, there had to be rawness while Bachchan’s image demanded monochromes,” she says.

It requires as much skill to paint digitally. Gupta uses the stylus pen to draw, but the advantages of the new media are its affordability and the scope to constantly upgrade. The works are on display and for sale on Gupta’s website.
