Maharashtra Assembly Elections: In Mumbai, Bhandup West sees highest turnout, Colaba lowest

Colaba assembly segment recorded the lowest turnout in the city with 44.49 per cent till 11pm, while Bhandup west segment, recorded highest 61.12 followed by Borivali where the turnout stood at 60.50 per cent.

Polling in MumbEven though Mumbai's turnout was low compared to the state's average polling, the voter turnout here improved slightly this time from the 2019 polls, when the final voter turnout in Mumbai city and suburbs district stood at 48.22 and 51.28 per cent respectively.

Mumbai seems to have fared better than the 2019 assembly polls on the voter turnout front with Mumbai city and its suburbs on Wednesday recording an estimated 49.07 and 51.92 per cent polling respectively till 11 pm.

Colaba assembly segment recorded the lowest turnout in the city with 44.49 per cent till 11pm, while Bhandup west segment, recorded highest 61.12 followed by Borivali where the turnout stood at 60.50 per cent.

Even though Mumbai’s turnout was low compared to the state’s average polling, the voter turnout here improved slightly this time from the 2019 polls, when the final voter turnout in Mumbai city and suburbs district stood at 48.22 and 51.28 per cent respectively.
During the recent Lok Sabha polls, Mumbai’s six LS constituencies had recorded 52.38 per cent.

Mumbai City and its suburbs, which have 36 assembly segments, are known for low voter turnout despite efforts by Election Commission officials to increase it.

In the 2019 assembly polls, the high profile Colaba constituency had polled 40.15 per cent. This time the polling percentage has increased slightly, but was much lower than the 2014 polls turnout of 46.19 per cent.

The Colaba assembly segment has been known for a low voter turnout despite efforts by the poll body to increase the voter turnout by launching several campaigns.

In Colaba, the incumbent BJP MLA Rahul Narvekar is seeking re-election and was in the fray against Congress candidate Heera Devasi.
In the Lok Sabha polls too the Colaba segment had recorded the lowest voter turnout, which stood at 43.68 percent.

In the 2019 assembly polls, Bhandup had recorded 56.17 per cent voting and in the 2014 assembly polls, it had recorded 55.36 per cent voting. The voter turnout this time has increased significantly in Bhandup west segment owing to an interesting triangular fight.

Worli, where Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray is seeking re-election, recorded 47.50 per cent voter turnout. Mahim, where MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s son Amit is making his electoral debut, recorded 55.23 per cent voting and a 50.08 per cent voter turnout was recorded at Malabar Hill segment, where BJP minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha is seeking re-election. The voter turnout stood at 46.15 per cent in Dharavi assembly segment, which was the most discussed seat during this election owing to the proposed slum redevelopment project here, which is being opposed by the MVA.

According to EC officials, the final voting percentage in the metropolis would go up further by a few percent since these are the provisional figures.

“Mumbai city and suburbs recorded 52.07 and 55.77 per cent voter turnout respectively till 5 pm and the final voting percentage is likely to go up by further as these are the provisional figures and queues were seen outside many polling booths even after the expiry of the official deadline for voting,” EC officials said
