A constable posted with the Worli Local Arms division-3 of Mumbai Police died on Wednesday in a city hospital where he was battling for life for three days, after he was allegedly injected with a poisonous substance by a gang of robbers and drug addicts on railway tracks near Matunga on April 27. He was a resident of Thane.
According to personnel of the Dadar Government Railway Police (GRP) that is investigating the case, the incident happened when constable Vishal Pawar, 30, was going for duty onboard a local train in civil clothes. When his train slowed down between Matunga and Sion stations around 9.30 pm, a person standing near the tracks hit on Pawar’s hand as he was talking over the phone standing near the door.
In the impact, Pawar’s phone fell down and the thief picked it up, according to GRP personnel. Since the train was slow, Pawar got down and chased the thief. After covering some distance, he was surrounded by a gang of alleged robbers and drug addicts. They started pushing him when Pawar resisted. Following this, one of them injected Pawar with a poisonous substance on his back as others held him. They also alleged poured a red color liquid into his mouth.
Pawar fell down and lost consciousness. He gained consciousness the next morning and somehow managed to return home, an officer said.
As his condition worsened, his family admitted him to a Thane hospital on Monday. The local Kopri police station recorded his statement and registered a case under sections 392 (robbery), 394 (hurting while robbing), 328 (causing harm by administering poisonous substances) of the Indian Penal Code.
“During treatment Pawar’s condition deteriorated and died on Wednesday,” said Manoj Patil, deputy commissioner of police, Central Railway.
The case has been transferred from Kopri police station to Dadar GRP for further investigation. Procedure to add IPC section 302 (murder) is underway. Multiple teams have been formed to nab the culprits, DCP Patil added.
30-year-old Pawar was recruited in police department in 2015. He is survived by wife and parents who live in Chalisgaon, Jalgaon. He got married three years ago and had no kids. His wife was at her mother’s place in Nashik since past eight days.
Pawar’s body has been taken to his village for performing last rites, said senior inspector Anil Kadam of Dadar GRP.
The doctors have not specified the cause of death yet and kept it reserved, Kadam added.
