Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said not only that his party will support Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Rajya Sabha by opposing the National Capital Territory of Delhi Amendment Bill 2023 but he will personally take initiative and speak to the like minded parties for the same as the issue was about the attack on parliamentary democracy.
“Bringing such ordinances is an attempt to limit parliamentary democracy in the country. NCP MPs will oppose the bill in the Parliament. In my 56 years of parliamentary life I have never seen such brazen attack against an elected government. It is the need of the hour for all to come together to save democracy,” he said, addressing a press conference along with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann. Both Kejriwal and Mann held a meeting with the NCP leadership along with the delegation of the AAP.
The AAP delegation on Wednesday had met former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray seeking the support for the same. Thackeray too has extended the support. Pawar said that it was time to act and act fast. “During my political career I have interacted with many political parties in different states. I will personally speak to like-minded parties and unitedly oppose the bill in the parliament,” Pawar added.
The Constitution Bench headed by the Chief Justice of India DY chandrachud recently held that the Delhi Government can make laws and administer civil services limiting the role of the LG in the national capital. Delhi CM said that if the BJP fails to pass the bill in Rajya Sabha, it will indicate the they will not form government in 2024.
“This fight is not limited to the people of Delhi but to safeguard the federal structure. The BJP is sending the message that if people don’t vote for them, they will not let the state government work,” said Kejriwal. He added that it was not limited to opposition unity but more about protecting the interests of Indians.
