Overnight rain and Elphinstone Bridge closure lead to severe traffic disruptions in Mumbai

The overnight rain led to waterlogging at several areas in Mumbai on Monday morning, affecting vehicular movement during peak travel hours for office-goers.

Following overnight heavy rain and the closure of the Elphinstone Bridge, people had difficulty navigating the roads in Mumbai, especially in the central part of the city, on Monday morning. Vehicles were stuck at Tilak Bridge, Hindmata, Parel, Curry Road, and Lotus Jetty in Worli because of waterlogging. Traffic was particularly affected in Khar subway, Milan subway, Andheri subway, Dadar TT, Mankhurd, and Chembur.

According to the traffic police, more traffic jams have been reported than usual at Kings Circle, on Maratha Mandir Road at Agripada, and the MMRDA south-bound road at BKC, Poonam Chambers Junction at Worli due to waterlogging. Traffic was slow from Lilavati Hospital to Mehboob Circle and Hill Road to Mehboob Circle in Bandra because of the Mount Mary Fair. Traffic on Coastal Road was also affected.

The Andheri subway was shut for vehicular movement and traffic diverted through the Gokhale Bridge. Traffic has been moving at a slow pace as half a foot of water has accumulated at the Khar subway and the Milan subway. One foot of water is accumulated at Panbai School Northbound Slip Road, as per the traffic police. Waterlogging of around 1.5 ft was also noticed in some parts of SV Road.

Dipali Dhate, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said, “The major issues were noticed on Tilak Bridge, Parel, Curry Road and Worli area. But police personnel have been deployed across the city to manage vehicular traffic. During peak hours it was hectic, but now it seems moving slowly.”

Residents have expressed anger at the lack of coordination between the police and other authorities. Many of them wrote on X that hundreds of vehicles honked continuously when caught in traffic snarls. Central Mumbai residents also complained that huge traffic blocked the entire lane near hospitals like KEM, Wadia and Tata Memorial Hospital and even near Sion Hospital, with ambulances also seen struggling.
