For the third consecutive day, the state has reported more than 1,000 Covid-19 cases. Despite this, Mumbai lags far behind in screening, a fact being highlighted in Brihanmumbai Municipal Commission’s (BMC) meeting. The Indian Express last week reported that despite Centre's directives to increase testing, BMC was conducting an average of 1,200 tests daily. This week, although average testing improved slightly to 1,500 a day, experts said it is still low for Mumbai which has an estimated 2 crore population. For instance, on April 14, of 1,729 Covid tests conducted in the city, 284 tested positive. The low testing shot up the test positivity rate (TPR), which is the ratio of samples turning positive to total number of tests, to 16.4 percent. Doctors said that civic-run dispensaries instructed to conduct rapid antigen testing of symptomatic patients and individuals with influenza like illness (ILI) are yet to get the kits. “We were informed last week that we would get the testing kit this week, but they haven't arrived,” said a doctor from a Borivali dispensary. Pathology services under civic-run Aapli Chikitsa are unable to provide Covid reports within 24 hours which is causing a staggering of reports. Doctors raised concern over delay in getting reports which takes over 48 hours. “Patients ask us for reports but we have no answer. This can further contribute in spreading infection especially among the elderly,” said an official. On April 14, the state reported 1,152 new Covid-19 cases with four deaths. India on Friday morning recorded 11.100 cases amid a steady rise in Covid tally.
