One Man Band

David Abraham is of the view that the human race will be wiped out within our lifetime.

David Abraham is of the view that the human race will be wiped out within our lifetime. So much so that he’s written an entire album’s worth of music revolving around this idea. “There’s so much bad news everywhere — more bad than good,” he explains. But the music is so melodious, even calming, that it’s almost impossible to imagine it speaks of a theme so disturbing. The lyrics, however – all of which were written by Abraham — do hint at the theme from time to time.

Falling broadly under the genre of alternative rock, the album, titled One Last Monsoon, was released in February under the moniker,The Koniac Net. It is also under this name that the newly-formed band will make its debut at Blue Frog this evening.

The 31-year old Mumbai-based musician started off as a solo artist, playing with guest musicians in New York in 1999-2008. “I always wanted friends to contribute to the album,” he says. In 2000,he began writing material that ultimately went into One Last Monsoon, which comprises 10 songs. Some guest musicians feature on the album, including Adil Kurwa and Aditya Ashok of the band The Colour Compound, but until now,the effort was largely solo.

The gig at Blue Frog will, therefore, mark the first time The Koniac Net will play together live and also the first time that songs from One Last Monsoon will be performed live. The 10 songs are also a tribute to Abraham’s greatest musical influences such as Swervedriver,Screaming Trees, the Toadies,Smashing Pumpkins,Radiohead and Tokyo Police Club. “This album is a tribute to all the bands I’ve listened to and been influenced by,” he says, adding,“It’s like a ‘thank you for making music that changed my life’.”

The band that will play at the Lower Parel establishment includes some of the musicians who have featured on the album, among whom are Adil Kurwa on bass,Jason D’Souza on guitar and Eden Shyodhi, who provides the female backing and occasionally lead vocals that Abraham believes add to the music. Karun Kannampilly on drums and Ishaan Krishna,a guest guitarist, make up the rest of a band and Abraham hopes all of them will become the permanent line-up.
