Controversial Senior Police Inspector Arun Borude had committed suicide in Shrirampur in his home district of Ahmednagar, the police said on Thursday,a day after he was found seriously injured on the railway tracks and died while being rushed to a hospital.
We have come to the definite conclusion that Borudes death was not an accident but a case of suicide. We have reached this conclusion on the basis of eyewitness accounts of people who live near the tracks. Yasmeen Shah and Ishad Sheikh are two of these witnesses, and there are three others, said
Additional Superintendent of Police (Ahmednagar) Sunil Kadasane.
Borude,an encounter specialist and Mumbai Police Crime Branch veteran, had been on the run since November 8 after he was accused of raping a 15-year-old girl from Powai.
The police have identified five people who witnessed the death and recorded their statements. According to these witnesses,Borude lay down on the tracks. However, when the train spotted him and slowed down,he got up and let it pass. Then he changed his mind and jumped into the gap between the engine and the first bogie of the train. This account is also backed up by the fact that his body was not completely mutilated, and instead he had injuries on his head, chest and shoulders, said the ASP.
While Borudes family suspected he had been murdered, the police maintained the former police officer had even called up his brother Prakash to inform him that he was going to end his life.
Borudes phone was not recovered from the scene of the suicide. It had been picked up by one of his relatives, and later taken by us. Investigations have revealed that Borudes last call was made to his brother Prakash to tell him that he was going to commit suicide on the railway tracks. Hearing this,Prakash instantly called up his relatives in Shrirampur, which is why they eventually reached the spot even before the police managed to, said Kadasane.
Prakash has demanded that the autopsy conducted in the case be videotaped. This has already been done. We have also taken DNA samples and skin grafts from his fingertips to match his identity. All due process has been followed, the police officer added.
