An officer, part of the probe, said that they have found that Rs 20,000 was transferred from the account of the first accused Abdul Rehman, a cleric earlier arrested by Ghaziabad police. (Express phhoto) The THANE Police which assisted the Ghaziabad police in tracking down a co-accused Shahnawaz Khan alias Baddo (23) in a case of alleged religious conversion said that based on their probe, including interrogation of the accused, they have found no cases of religious conversion in Mumbra area.
Earlier, DCP Nipun Agarwal from Ghaziabad police had told the media that they had received information about “mass conversions in Mumbra of around 400 people” carried out by the accused in the case, which is yet to be verified by them. Based on this statement, Thane police, under whose jurisdiction Mumbra falls, began investigating the matter.
Thane DCP (zone 1) Ganesh Gawade said, “Based on our investigation and interrogation of the accused Shahnawaz Khan, it is clear that no case of religious conversion has taken place in Mumbra.”
Ghaziabad police produced Khan before a Thane court which granted his transit remand to the police for three days. This means that police must produce him before an appropriate court in Ghaziabad within three days.
The court further said it was the responsibility of Ghaziabad police to ensure he is taken safely. Calls and messages sent to the Thane DCP did not elicit any response.
An officer, part of the probe, said that they have found that Rs 20,000 was transferred from the account of the first accused Abdul Rehman, a cleric earlier arrested by Ghaziabad police. Rehman was arrested in connection with the case where a youngster was allegedly converted on a gaming platform.
“…We were concerned about possible cases in Mumbra, which was not the case. Now, Ghaziabad police will investigate the case further,” the officer added.
