It has been over a month since the decomposed body of BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) scientific officer Mahadev P Iyer (48) was found in his flat at BARC quarters in Gamdevi. But the Gamdevi police,who had registered a case of murder,could not make any arrests in the case so far. Though the police claim that they have interrogated as many as 100 people in the case,they dont seem to have got any vital clues that might help them nab the murderer of Iyer.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Sanjay Mohite said,We have been reviewing the case for days. But we have not got any clue. We are probing all angles and have questioned around 100-odd people. He said the police aso checked the telephone records of Iyer,but even that did not yield any clues. The 100 people who have been interrogated included Iyers colleagues,the residents of the building where he lived and also a few men who are suspected to have been in touch with Iyer. Police suspect that they may have been homosexuals, said a police officer on condition of anonymity.

Iyer was a private person. None of his colleagues knew much about him. Moreover,the guest register of his building did not show any names for 15 days before his murder. These made it difficult for us to figure out who might have visited Iyer last, said another police officer.

Mahadev Padmanabhan Iyer was found dead in his flat at Anandbhavan near Breach Candy hospital on the night of February 22. Some of his neighbours had decided to open the door of Iyers house after a foul smell started emanating from there.

They opened the door with a duplicate key. One of the neighbours saw him lying dead on the bed with a nylon cord around his neck, said the officer. Police suspect that the cord around his neck might have been used for a sexual experiment and do not believe that it was used to kill him.

Iyer stayed alone in his flat. Investigators had found found packets of unused condoms,pornographic video CDs and photographs of male models in the flat. These made police suspect that Iyer was a homosexual and his killer knew him. The autopsy report revealed that Iyer died owing to internal haemorrhaging in the head. The report didnt mention about any external injuries on his head,adding to the mystery.
