MY WAY

When we bring up Road,Movie in a conversation with Abhay Deol, his first response is to tell us what to expect from the film. “I’m dancing to three item numbers while the heroine has only one and Satish Kaushik has given a horrible performance,” he says grimly. We’re baffled and our expression must have made him tone it down,“Please write this. I want a lot of people to watch the film and I think the thought of me doing three item numbers might pull in the crowds, don’t you think?”

We wonder if we should break the news to him that he doesn’t need to spread any rumours to pull in the crowds. He finally puts us at ease when he says,“I’ll be serious now. The story of the film is very simple. I drive around the interiors of Rajasthan in a truck, taking along with me a cinema setup and we show a film at every stop. It’s basically called moving cinema,” he explains. “While shooting,we did actually drive a lot around the interiors in the heat and interacted with the locals. Everyone we met was crazy about cinema,a true fact, which is also the main flavour of the film.”

The actor does believe that our country is in fact quite obsessed with films. “A simple tweet from a film star creates uproars, obviously we’re crazy about everything connected with them,” he says with a hint of sarcasm.

He says that his main reason for selecting this film was Dev Benegal. “I will always say yes to anything that he has to offer me. It was an added bonus that the script was really good,” says the 32-year-old. “Dev is such a great director because he knows exactly what he wants from us and will get the best out of anybody. He also has this great sense of humour laced with sarcasm. He can say anything with a poker straight face and we are often left wondering whether or not he is serious.” It looks like the actor adopted this sense of humour from his director.

While most people call his choice of films extremely unconventional,Deol is confident that his choices have always been right. “Categorise the films in any way you want, but it has worked for me,hasn’t it?” he asks. The actor seems slightly annoyed by the constant reference to his work as non-commercial. “I fail to understand what people mean by the word commercial. If you add a song and dance then the film becomes commercial, otherwise it is unconventional cinema. This is really absurd branding. Commercial means making money and Dev D and Oye Lucky,Lucky Oye did well at the box office and sold a lot of DVDs so this means that they did well commercially.

But why are they still called non-commercial movies?”

Deol’s own production house,Forbidden Films will soon start work on it’s own film Basra, where the actor will be playing a RAW agent,“It’s all still in the planning stages. There are a lot of ideas and film concepts that I have. This year is a really busy one for me but I hope that one of my productions will work out this year.” Since he comes from a filmy family,it was not difficult for the actor to put on the producer’s hat,“I’ve always been surrounded by films so I could always understand the production angle. What I learnt the most after starting my production house was the business of cinema. It is quite complicated and interesting and I want to get a firm grip on how it works before making any major decisions,” he says.
