MVA goes for 3-2-1 formula: Shiv Sena UBT 15, Cong 14, NCP and allies 7

The distribution is based on the results of the recent Lok Sabha elections, in which the MVA secured four out of six parliamentary seats in Mumbai.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition is nearing an agreement on a seat-sharing formula for the 36 assembly seats in Mumbai. The proposed formula allocates 15 seats to Shiv Sena (UBT), 14 to Congress, and seven to the Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) and other allies.

The distribution is based on the results of the recent Lok Sabha elections, in which the MVA secured four out of six parliamentary seats in Mumbai. According to Congress sources, among the six assembly segments corresponding to these Lok Sabha seats, the winning party will contest three seats. The remaining three seats will be divided as follows: two will go to the second-largest party in the MVA, and one to the third ally.

“We will follow the 3-2-1 formula for the Lok Sabha seats we won, with the winning party receiving either 3 or 4 seats, and the rest allocated based on respective strengths. This formula has been approved by the leaders of all three parties,” said an MVA leader.

“The Shiv Sena will contest a higher number of seats in Mumbai within the MVA as it has more MLAs and a stronger organisation,” the leader added.

Based on the recent general elections, the MVA leads in 20 out of 36 assembly constituencies in Mumbai city and suburbs. In the 2019 assembly elections, when Shiv Sena contested in alliance with the BJP, it fought for 19 seats and won 14. The Congress contested 29 seats and won 4, while the NCP contested 6 seats and won 1. The Samajwadi Party (SP), which won the Mankhurd-Shivajinagar seat, is now part of the MVA.

During Lok Sabha elections, the MVA seat-sharing talks had faced hurdles over the Sagli constituency after Thackeray led Sena refused to let go of it for Vishal Patil of Congress. Patil, however, contested the election as an independent and won the election.

This time, the MVA initiated seat-sharing talks in a bid to avoid similar trouble. To smoothen the process, Thackeray visited Delhi and met Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders of the Congress.

Top leaders of the three parties have been repeatedly conveying to its workers to not worry about the seat-sharing and that winnability will be the only criteria. All leaders have been reiterating that irrespective of which party gets the ticket, other two will have to work to ensure MVA comes to power.
