The developments that unfolded after the killing of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh of Massajog village in Beed and conflicts arising due to caste polarisation are a huge setback to morality, said BJP Minister Pankaja Munde on Monday.
Speaking at the Loksatta Samvad in Mumbai, the cabinet Minister for Environment and Climate Change said, “Santosh Deshmukh was a BJP activist and my polling centre chief… What is really disturbing is one entire community being singled out and termed criminals. What objective will it achieve?”
Citing various instances in the state, Munde said, “When you look at all these aspects, it shows a setback to morality… Power can make individuals arrogant. At times, political leaders give patronage to party workers and other times the workers let their leaders down by their conduct.”
About the demand for resignation of her cousin and minister Dhananjay Munde for his alleged links with Walmik Karad, who is among eight persons arrested in the sarpanch killing, Munde said, “Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar have to take a decision. I am sure they will make appropriate decisions based on facts. I am not any authority to tell them what they should do or not.”
Talking about the rape of a woman at Swargate bus depot in Pune and harassment of the daughter of a Union Minister of State in Jalna, Munde said, “The state government cannot keep a vigil everywhere… Whether it is ministers, celebrities or common people, the security of girls/women is a cause of concern. There should be no discrimination. There should be fear of law among criminals.”
Maintaining that she no longer harbours high political ambitions, Munde said, “I am happy with the environment portfolio.” She also dismissed any differences with top BJP leaders and said, “However, at times, my comments were misinterpreted in the media.”
