Mumbai’s Currey Road station gets a new foot overbridge

A result of huge public demand, the bridge will have a single span with two staircases, to be built at a cost of Rs 1.35 crore.

Commuters using Currey Road railway station on Central Railway can heave a sigh of relief with the laying of the foundation for a new foot overbridge on Thursday morning. The bridge, which is 3.66 m wide and approximately 21 m long, will connect platform number 1 and 2 on the west side of Currey Road station. Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu laid the foundation stone for the bridge which will serve as the necessary second point of entry-exit for commuters of Currey Road station, which currently has only one bridge.

A result of huge public demand, the bridge will have a single span with two staircases, to be built at a cost of Rs 1.35 crore.

“The foot overbridge will divide the commuter density which crowds at the single entry-exit point of Currey Road station. It will be even more useful when the Monorail station is built on the other side, to direct the crowds,” said an official.

Commuters welcomed the idea and expressed that it was a necessary addition, to share the huge number of footfalls at the station, which has seen rising traffic after Central Mumbai grew into a major business district and shopping destination in the last 10 to 15 years. Elated by the idea of such a bridge, Ramaswamy, a commuter, said, “It comes as a huge relief to a regular user of Currey Road station like me. Not only does it save my time but also divides the crowd who only use the single bridge at the station.”

Though the bridge is likely to take a year to be completed, authorities confirmed that work would be wrapped up by the end of the year.

Other stations likely to see construction of foot over-bridges include Mumbra, Bhandup, Kalwa, Diva, Khar Road and Vile Parle stations.
