After more than 600 mm of rain over the weekend, nearly 1,500 passengers on stalled long-distance trains and nearly 400 residents of low-lying salt pan lands in Manikpur had to be rescued on boats by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
On Monday, a section of the wall between nine-odd buildings and the railway tracks at Sandhurst Road gave way. While north-bound trains were affected on the main line for some time, the services resumed within an hour.
According to sources, a team from IIT-Mumbai, the BMC and railways inspected the Gokhale bridge on Friday to ascertain the cause of the collapse. Railway officials stated that professors from the technology institute had confirmed that the girders of the bridge were not weak.
Andheri bridge collapse: Five people were injured and train services were hit when part of a 47-year-old ROB across the railway line at Andheri collapsed on the tracks between Andheri and Vile Parle stations on the Western Railway’s suburban line.
Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said he has advised Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai to conduct a six-month audit of 450 bridges on both Central Railway and Western Railway to identify what work requires to be done.
