A 40-year-old woman was arrested in Kherwadi area of Bandra (East) on Tuesday allegedly for killing her 19-year-old daughter following a scuffle on Monday, police said.

According to personnel of Nirmal Nagar police station, the accused woman Tina Umesh Bagade lived with her daughter Bhumika and two younger children — another duaghter and son— after her husband died a few years ago.

According to police, Bhumika, a junior college student, was dating a man, against her mother’s wishes, over which the mother and daughter had regular fights.

On Monday, they had a heated argument over the same issue that led to a scuffle, during which Bhumika bit off part of her mother’s index finger. In a fit of rage, Bagade strangulated Bhumika with her hands, leading to her death.

She also sustained an injury near her eyebrow when she fell down. The incident took place in front of Bhumika’s younger siblings. Bagade threatened them not to tell anyone about the incident, police said.

When Bagade’s brothers who lives nearby rushed to her house, she told them that Bhumika had an epilepsy attack.

They rushed Bhumika to VN Desai hospital where doctors declared her dead.

Police were informed and during panchnama, bruises near her eyebrow and neck made them suspicious.

Under zonal DCP Dixit Gedam’s supervision, ACP Suhas Kambale and senior inspector Shrimant Shinde put a team to investigate the matter.

“During preliminary postmortem examination, doctors told us that Bhumika died of strangulation. After this, we called Bagade and family to the police station where Bhumika’s siblings narrated the incident. Later, Bagade confessed to the crime during sustained interrogation,” said sub-inspector Sandip Jarande, preliminary investigation officer, who is also the complainant in the case.

Bagade decided to cover up her crime using epilepsy story as Bhumika had a history of epilepsy for which she had undergone treatment at a civic hospital, Jarande said.
