Mumbai University issues legal notice to UMASA

The University says the union’s actions show “institutional discourtesy” and overlook recent positive initiatives, including regular CAS interviews, research incentives, and measures for faculty welfare.

The notice comes against the backdrop of a phased protest launched by UMASA from Monday over long-pending issues, vacant positions, lack of coordination between admissions and examination processes, and other service-related concerns. The notice comes against the backdrop of a phased protest launched by UMASA from Monday over long-pending issues, vacant positions, lack of coordination between admissions and examination processes, and other service-related concerns. The University of Mumbai has issued a legal notice to the University of Mumbai Academic Staff Association (UMASA), alleging unfair trade-union practices and disrespect toward senior university authorities.

The notice comes against the backdrop of a phased protest launched by UMASA from Monday over long-pending issues, vacant positions, lack of coordination between admissions and examination processes, and other service-related concerns. According to university officials, meetings have been held with UMASA to address the issues raised, and another meeting is scheduled for November 24. Following this, UMASA suspended its protest from Thursday evening.

The notice, issued on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, objects to two actions by UMASA: sending a meeting notice with only a two-day preparation window, and demanding a meeting before 1 pm on the same day, despite officials being engaged in state-level meetings with the Higher Education Minister, the Chancellor, and the Chief Minister.

The University says the union’s actions show “institutional discourtesy” and overlook recent positive initiatives, including regular CAS interviews, research incentives, and measures for faculty welfare.

UMASA has been asked to submit a written explanation within three days and to follow proper notice procedures in the future. The University has warned that it may pursue legal or administrative remedies if the union fails to comply.
