THE MUMBAI police on Sunday registered an FIR and arrested two persons including a truck driver after allegations were made that he was transporting cow meat in his tempo on the JJ flyover in the evening. The police have seized nearly 200 kg meat and have sent it for forensic test to check whether it was cow meat.

The police also registered a counter FIR against some of the protestors that had gathered outside the JJ Marg police station and were chanting slogans. The police deployed additional forces to ensure that the incident did not lead to any law-and-order problems.

An officer said that around 5.30 pm on Sunday, the Mumbai police control room received a call that cow meat was being transported in a truck. A team from the Nagpada police station reached the spot where a group of people had gathered. On checking the truck, the police found 200 kg meat and some bones in it. The driver of the truck was missing.

The police then seized the truck and sent it for forensic test to find out whether it was cow meat. Further based on the complaint given by the group that had made the call, the Nagpada police registered an FIR against the unidentified truck driver.

An officer said later they found the driver of the truck and the owner of the shop, and the duo was placed under arrest. “The two are Govandi residents and would supply meat to shops in the first half and would take the waste back in the evening,” the officer said.

An officer said that initially the group of people who gave the complaint had mistakenly gone to the JJ Marg police station assuming that the spot where the truck was found came under its jurisdiction. However, on finding the police team in a meeting and upset that their complaint was not taken, they started chanting slogans outside the police station following which an FIR was registered against them as well.

A senior officer said they also carried out a route march in the area to ensure that no rumour mongering took place which could lead to law-and-order problems. “We have requested people not to believe in rumours and approach the police in case there was any complaint,” the official added.
