Mumbai this week: Chintan Upadhyay held guilty for wife, her lawyer’s murder; Uddhav Sena to hold Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park
Next week: Swabhimani Shetkari Sangh chief Raju Shetti's padyatra across western Maharashtra to continue till November 17.

While artist Chintan Upadhyay asserted his conscience is clear, a sessions court held him guilty of abetting and conspiring the murder of his wife Hema Upadhyaya and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani, and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Here are some notable facts about the case:
🔴 The court convicted him considering evidence including a retracted confession of his co-accused, Call Data Records, and a “conspiracy” meeting in Chembur. Further, the song “Alvida Alvida” posted by Chintan on his Facebook account a day before the murders was also considered. However, the police’s theory that his sketches showed his “mental condition” was rejected.
🔴 The court observed that Bhambhani was killed as he was accompanying Hema on the day of the incident and there was no conspiracy to murder him.
🔴 Even as Chintan and three others were found guilty, the main accused is on the run since eight years, despite a dedicated team being on the lookout for him.
Following are the other important updates from Mumbai and Maharashtra in the past week (October 9-15):
More woes than food segregation at IIT-B
The “veg-only” tables controversy at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has resulted in significant tension during meal times at the canteens in question. Students who eat eggs are now seen avoiding veg-only tables at crowded hours, even if those are not occupied. But this is not all that dogs the students. Academic stress contributes to 76 percent of the major stress and discomfort of first year students at IIT-B.
On the political front
NCP: On the day he completed 100 days of joining the ruling dispensation, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said he decision to join the Maharashtra government was based on the current social and political situations in the state. He laid claim to the legacy of Maharashtra’s first chief minister late Yashavantrao Chavan, but did not mention uncle Sharad Pawar in his open letter. Meanwhile, Baramati MP Supriya Sule said she will be the first to garland Ajit Pawar if he becomes the CM, asserting that her political and ideological fight is only against the BJP.
Shiv Sena: Even as Uddhav Thackeray’s Sena (UBT) landed the permission to hold the Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park, the tussle over disqualification of Shinde group MLAs continues. Unfazed by pressure from both sides, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar said he will take his decision on the basis of the rules of the state legislature.
