What makes forecasting challenging in a city like Mumbai?
Unlike in the land, where weather patterns are fixed and systems generally move in a very particular manner, Mumbai’s proximity to the sea means that weather changes very rapidly.
Furthermore, being located in a tropical zone, the frequency of changes in weather is even faster.
Furthermore, meteorologists have also alluded that forecasting is prone to more uncertainties when the area or window is more specific, and smaller akin to Mumbai which is a small stretch of land along the Arabian Sea.
In a bid to offset some of the uncertainty, the weather bureau is working to gather more data by installing more equipment and models.
What caused the heavy rain and why it eluded models?
According to the IMD, there was a low-pressure area (LPA) over Rajasthan on July 14. However, early on July 15 (Tuesday), the LPA rapidly turned into a depression. This sudden depression led to conversion of moisture, while there was another low pressure area over Jharkhand in the eastern side, ushering in sudden heavy rainfall in Mumbai.
It was particularly the suburbs of Mumbai which experienced heaviest spells — some areas such as Ghatkopar, Powai, Vikhroli received over 80mm rain — over a course of few hours.
