A police inspector posted with the Economic Offence Wing of the Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar Commissionerate has been booked while his assistant was caught red handed while accepting and demanding a bribe from a 35-year-old man. The ACB officials said that the police inspector and the constable had demanded Rs 35 lakhs to favour them in a case and was caught while accepting the first installment of Rs 15 lakhs.
According to the police officials, the police inspector has been identified as Mahendra Shelar and he is yet to be arrested in the case. While the constable who was caught accepting the bribe is Ganesh Vanave.
The ACB officials revealed that Shelar and Vanave demanded Rs 50 lakhs from the complainant and his client to help them secure a bail and not to arrest him in a case. Later they agreed to favour them for Rs 35 lakhs.
An ACB officer said, “As the complainant did not want to pay them any money, he approached our office and lodged a complaint.”
The officials added that the complaint was verified and a case was registered against Shelar and Vanave.
Subsequently on Wednesday, the ACB officials laid a trap and caught Vanave red handed while accepting the first installment of the bribe which was Rs 15 lakhs.
“Vanave was arrested in the case but the police inspector is absconding and we are trying to trace him,” said an ACB officer.
