Poisoning is the most common method for suicide attempts, according to a study conducted in Navi Mumbai’s MGM hospital to find out the personality traits and factors that drive people to attempt suicide.

Over a 100 patients at the hospital were evaluated for the study, which was published in the International Journal of Research in Medical Sciences. Men made up 54 per cent and women 46 per cent of the group. Nearly 68 per cent of the patients were aged between 18 and 25.

Contrary to earlier studies, unemployment was not found to be a risk factor for suicide attempts – 38 per cent of the sample patients were students, 33 per cent salaried, 22 per cent ran their own businesses and only 7 per cent were unemployed.

According to the study, 93 per cent of the patients had consumed organophosphorus compounds (OPC). Most Indian studies too say one of the most common methods of suicide attempt is by consuming OPC. This maybe due to its easy availability, especially in semi-urban and rural population.

The present study found that only 14 per cent of the patients had a history of previous suicide attempts. In all, 15 per cent of the patients attempted suicide again within one month, 28 per cent within a month to one year and 57 per cent did so between one to two years.

Financial problems also drove some patients to attempt suicide. Patients with borderline personality traits were significantly associated with repeat suicide attempts between one and two years.
