Mumbai News Live Updates: Navi Mumbai civic body appoints consultant to find new water sources for city's needs

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has engaged a consultant to identify new water sources to meet the demands of its growing population. An expert committee, led by Commissioner Kailas Shinde, has also been formed to explore options for increasing the city's water supply.

In light of rapid urban development and projected population growth—expected to reach 4.42 million by 2055—the NMMC is proactively planning to secure adequate water resources. Currently, the city relies on approximately 450 million liters of water daily from the Morbe dam in Raigad district. However, ongoing large-scale projects, including the Navi Mumbai international airport and various housing developments, may soon outstrip this supply.

To address these challenges, the NMMC has issued a tender for a consultant who will conduct environmental studies and feasibility assessments for potential new water projects. One significant recommendation from the expert committee includes utilizing wastewater from the Patalganga river and the Tata Power Generation Station at Bhira to help supplement water needs.

This initiative underscores the urgency for sustainable water management solutions as Navi Mumbai continues to grow.
