Uddhav Thackeray slams centre over 'One Nation, One Election' bill and other issues
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday criticized the Centre's move to introduce the 'One Nation, One Election' bill in the Lok Sabha, calling it an attempt to distract from the pressing issues facing the country. Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Thackeray demanded that the election process be made more transparent before any implementation of the simultaneous polls proposal.
Thackeray also took a dig at the Devendra Fadnavis-led Maharashtra government, urging it to honor its pre-election promise of providing Rs 2,100 per month to women under the Ladki Bahin scheme. Currently, women in Maharashtra receive Rs 1,500 per month under the scheme.
On Tuesday, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced two bills in the Lok Sabha aimed at facilitating simultaneous elections across the country. The bills—the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024—aim to align elections in Union Territories like Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, and Delhi. The opposition, however, has criticized these draft laws as an attack on India’s constitutional structure. (PTI inputs)
