Though the monsoon has missed its official onset date of June 11 in Mumbai, light rain continued to lash the city till late night Tuesday. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 6 mm and 10 mm of rainfall in its Santacruz and Colaba observatories, respectively. The IMD, in its latest forecast, said Mumbai would witness light rain till June 17.
IMD officials have attributed the rains to be the effects of Cyclone Biparjoy developed in the Arabian Sea. They maintained that these spells of rain were pre-monsoon showers only, and it would take another week for monsoon rain in Mumbai.
“Owing to the cyclone, the monsoon onset has been postponed as the moisture has been diverted. Therefore, monsoon in Mumbai can only arrive around on after June 14-15,” said an official.
Cyclone Biparjoy is moving northwards towards Kutch and Gujarat and may further cross the Mandvi coast in Gujarat and Karachi coast in Pakistan.
The IMD said Cyclone Biparjoy has “extensive damaging potential” and is likely to affect the Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Jamnagar districts of Gujarat the most.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in Maharashtra, Dahanu received 46 mm of rain, Mahabaleshwar 29 mm and Harnai 21 mm till Wednesday morning.
