TWO OFF-DUTY police constables, who chased down a bag snatcher and placed him under arrest, will be rewarded by the Mumbai police.

On Wednesday around 9.30pm, metal businessman Sanjay Mehta was walking home after shutting his shop in Khetwadi area of Girgaum, said the police.

He was carrying a bag that contained Rs 1 lakh. After he had walked some distance from his shop, the accused hit his hand and fled with the bag. Mehta, who was in a crowded place, started shouting for help.

Two police constables — Abhijeet Salunkhe, posted at Bandra Kurla Complex police station, and Anant Shirsat, posted with Local Arms unit — were standing near the police quarters located nearby in the area. As soon as they realised what had happened, they began to chase the accused and managed to overpower him.

The accused, identified as Zahir Ansari (22), a resident of Azad Nagar slums, was also carrying a chopper, said the police. Ansari was later handed over to the VP Road police station where an FIR was registered.

“Since the two constables were off duty but still chased the accused and overpowered him, they will be rewarded,” said Mumbai police spokesperson Dhananjay Kulkarni.
