BEST bus accidents on the rise

According to figures detailing the records of accidents, 76 cases of non-fatal accidents have occurred in 2015-16 as compared to the 20 cases of non-fatal accidents in the year 2014-15.

DESPITE VARIOUS accident prevention measures in place, the number of accidents involving Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking buses has risen sharply in the past one year, with officials and drivers themselves admitting that congestion on Mumbai roads and poor mental health of some bus drivers being the main reasons.

According to figures detailing the records of accidents, 76 cases of non-fatal accidents have occurred in 2015-16 as compared to the 20 cases of non-fatal accidents in the year 2014-15.

Similarly, the number of fatal accidents has also slightly gone up in the last year. From 24 cases of fatal accidents in the year 2014-15, there were 29 cases of fatal accidents recorded in the year 2015-16. This comes despite a spree of measures including lectures on safe and defensive driving, training sessions regarding the importance of following traffic rules, yoga and meditation sessions, relaxation time to the drivers among others undertaken by the BEST.

Jagadish Patil, General Manager of BEST, said, “Mental and physical health of BEST drivers is critical to us. We also let our bus drivers avail free medical check-ups so that the importance on keeping good health is not ignored.”

A series of accident prevention measures by BEST are also in place to boost the morale of BEST bus drivers. Some of them include employing training officers to .

BEST drivers’ union leader Shashank Rao said, “Bus drivers do lead a stressed life owing to the longer working hours and difficulty to drive safe in congested roads. They are hardly offered proper restrooms in their break times as well.”
