Mumbai: 11 Mantralaya protesters face suicide bid charges

The Marine Drive police on Wednesday registered a case of attempt to suicide against 11 persons for allegedly protesting inside the Mantralaya and climbing over the safety net installed on the first floor of the secretariat. Police said that those booked were allowed to go after serving them notices under section 41 (A) of CrPC.

The incident happened during a protest by farmers at the Mantralaya on Tuesday, demanding proper compensation for their land acquired for various projects.

A senior police officer said, “The protesters jumped on the safety net that was installed on the first floor to prevent suicides. And after we were informed, the protesters were detained and brought to the police station.”


A case under relevant sections of attempt to commit suicide under Indian Penal Code was registered.

“In total 11 known persons and 25 others were booked. We have not arrested anyone in the case. We have served them notices and allowed them to go,” said an officer.
