The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has rolled out 12,000 additional bus trips to handle the surge in travelers for Diwali. Running at a pace of 500 extra trips per day, these buses will continue through November 18 to accommodate long-distance commuters. Local State Transport (ST) divisions are also gearing up with added short-distance services, anticipating heavy traffic for nearby destinations, according to officials.

On October 25, MSRTC marked a historic day for ticket sales, with a record-breaking 17,215 reservations made through its mobile app alone. The surge highlights the appeal of ST services as an affordable travel option, especially beneficial to senior citizens and female passengers, who already enjoy specific fare concessions.

This year has seen an overwhelming response to MSRTC’s online reservation system and mobile app, officials noted. The advance booking trend has not only supported smoother travel planning but also enabled MSRTC to strategise extra services efficiently.

The MSRTC operates buses in remote areas of Maharashtra and also a few services in other states. With a fleet size of 16,000 buses approximately, it serves approximately around 53 lakh commuters daily.
