Monsoon may hit city by Saturday: IMD

There are chances of rains in Mumbai by the weekend, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday. If the southwest monsoon arrives by the weekend,it would be 10 days after its normal arrival.

K Sathidevi, director IMD,said that the IMD is pinning its hopes on some systems expected to form over the Bay of Bengal by June 20. This may trigger monsoon in the western region. “We are anticipating low pressure to develop over the Bay of Bengal. If this system builds up without interruption then the city may get heavy rains by Saturday,” she explained. The IMD official said they are constantly monitoring the weather systems and the advance of southwest monsoon over the region.

“Earlier we were expecting some development by Thursday but now that has weakened,” she added.

Several regions in the western suburbs experienced pre-monsoon showers early on Tuesday morning. At 8.30 am on Tuesday, the city recorded 35.6 degrees Celsius and 34.7 degrees Celsius maximum temperature and 29.4 degrees Celsius and 29.5 degrees Celsius minimum temperature at Colaba and Santacruz respectively. The humidity was 83 per cent and 66 per cent respectively.

According to the IMD’s numerical weather prediction models the southwest monsoon—which has so far advanced up to Ratnagiri —will not advance in the next three days. However the models also indicated a strengthening of monsoon surge and possible revival with the formation of a low pressure area over north Bay of Bengal by June 20.
