13 MNS workers arrested in toll booth protest case, 12 granted bail

Girap added that they are still on the lookout for some of the other accused who have been named in the FIRs and are currently absconding.

THE MUMBAI police Tuesday arrested 13 persons affiliated to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in connection with in three FIRs registered over conducting ruckus at toll booths in Mulund where they asked car drivers not to pay toll.

While 12 persons who were arrested were released on bail the same day, one accused Roshan Wadkar (29) who set fire to a tyre at the toll booth causing destruction of property charged in a separate case was remanded to police custody till Thursday.

The MNS Monday held protests at three prominent toll plazas in Mumbai, Thane and Panvel calling for the abolition of toll tax for small vehicles.

MNS workers also circulated a clip in which Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is heard saying that the state was not charging toll on small vehicles but only on commercial vehicles.

The protests lead to massive traffic snarls near toll booths.

Senior inspector of Navghar police station D Girap said that three FIRs were registered Monday night in connection with the toll booth protests by MNS. Those named in the FIRs included Thane MNS head Avinash Jadhav.

“On Tuesday, we arrested 12 persons in the two FIRs that were related to protest near toll boths and asking people to not pay toll tax. They were granted bail by the court. However, in the third case where one Roshan Wadkar set a tyre on fire near the toll naka causing damage to the computer, CCTV cameras and computers at the toll naka, he was remanded to police custody till Thursday,” Girap said.

He added that they are still on the lookout for some of the other accused who have been named in the FIRs and are currently absconding.
