The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has announced a new tender for the construction of a passenger jetty and terminal facility at Radio Club Gateway of India, with an updated project cost of over Rs 199 crore, up by over 20% from the previous estimate of Rs 165 crore.
According to an MMB official, the increase in cost is attributed to changes in construction methodology as outlined in the revised detailed project report. The project will now follow the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) model, allowing the appointed contractor to propose design modifications if necessary.
Previously, a tender for this project was floated, but the bids received were 40% higher than the estimated cost.
Prominent companies like L&T, Vadhavan Port, and T&T Infra participated in the earlier bidding process. However, the official emphasized that the revised project cost is unrelated to the higher bids received earlier and is primarily due to changes in the construction approach.
The new passenger jetty and terminal facility at Radio Club aims to alleviate congestion at the existing Gateway of India, where small boats currently berth. The official highlighted that the new jetty would provide safer access for commuters traveling by boat, with the capacity to berth 20 boats simultaneously. Moreover, it will protect the heritage site Gateway of India.
The MMB plans to offer various passenger amenities at the Radio Club Jetty, including a cafeteria, ticket counters, parking facilities, a landscaped green area, and an amphitheater.
