A sessions court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife, after a quarrel with her, where he accused her of not visiting him in jail. The murder took place on the day of his release from jail. Mohammed Nasim Khalil Ansari was found guilty under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. According to submissions made by additional public prosecutor Ramesh Siroya, Ansari was arrested in a theft case in 2019. After his release from jail in the case, he returned home in the morning on February 26, 2020. He got into a quarrel with his wife Yasminbano, where he got angry and began accusing her of not visiting him in jail. While a neighbour tried to intervene, he told him to mind his business and left the house. The police alleged that Ansari returned later that night and again began physically assaulting his wife and when she ran out to save herself, he chased her. During the chase, he accidentally stepped on their neighbour's child. When the neighbour objected, Ansari began threatening him. The neighbour then went to the police station to file a report. Meanwhile, Ansari dragged his wife by her hair and kicked her in the stomach twice, due to which she collapsed. He then assaulted her with a stone, before fleeing the spot. A case of murder was filed at Sewri police station. "The accused attempted to set up a defence that the deceased had sustained injuries in a motor vehicle accident, that he was present at his house at the time of the incident, and that upon learning of it, he rushed to the spot and, along with others, carried the deceased to the hospital, from where the police took him to the police station. However, this defence is specifically contradicted by the testimony of eye witness," additional sessions judge, S R Navander said. While Ansari had claimed that the eyewitness, the neighbour who had intervened, was a habitual witness cited by the police and had a previous dispute with him, the court said he had no reason to falsely implicate him. The court also relied on medical evidence on the nature of injuries sustained by Yasminbano.
