The Byculla police on Friday registered a case of housebreaking and robbery worth over Rs 18 lakh committed allegedly by the brother and sister of the victim.

On Friday night when Abdul Kadirali Khan (35) and his wife returned to their house in Mazagaon,he found that gold and diamond jewellery worth over Rs 18.18 lakh was missing from his cupboard. On enquiring, one of Khan’s neighbours, who had a key to his house, told him that his brother Jaleel (33) and sister Tabasum (37) had gone to the house after having taken the keys from him. Khan’s suspicion immediately fell on his brother and sister and he registered a case of housebreaking with the Byculla police, claiming they (Jaleel and Tabasum) had used a fake key to open the cupboard where the jewellery was kept.

Jaleel and Tabasum, who deny the charge, have been arrested by the police. The police are trying to authenticate Khan’s allegation against the duo.

Police Inspector G Rathod of the Byculla police said that Jaleel and Tabasum live with Khan and had reached home at 5:30 pm on Friday. “They claim to have no knowledge of the theft but Khan has accused that they used a duplicate key to open the safe in the cupboard that had the jewellery. We are looking into Khan’s allegation but also probing if someone else could have stolen the jewellery,” said Rathod.
