Sheikh wrote that as per the resolution, action would be taken against the loan sanctioning officer if a beneficiary failed to repay it. (X/ rais_shk)Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Sheikh has urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to set up a research and training institute for minorities stating that schemes implemented by the Maulana Azad Minorities Financial Development Development are term loans with minimal benefits.
In a letter to the chief minister, the Bhiwandi MLA wrote that for the corporation’s loans, the surety is a government employee, or immovable property has to be pledged—conditions that he said were impossible for students from minority communities to fulfil.
The Dr APJ Abdul Kalam education loan scheme and the term loan scheme for industry and business are implemented by the corporation established in 1956. The state government has increased the government guarantee for the corporation from Rs 30 crore to Rs 500 crore in a resolution dated January 9.
Sheikh wrote that as per the resolution, action would be taken against the loan sanctioning officer if a beneficiary failed to repay it. “This onerous condition will make loan approval extremely difficult. The maximum loan limit of Maulana Azad Corporation per beneficiary is Rs 30 lakh. Therefore, students and professionals will be able to get loan benefits in a tiny amount,” he wrote, adding that the loan was also very limited considering the size of the community in the state.
Shaikh argued that a research, training and human development institute was the need of the hour for minority students.
“SARTHI, BARTI, MAHAJYOTI provide scholarships, training etc for students from the respective communities for higher education as well as for competitive exams. It also provides direct scholarships to students pursuing Ph D and higher education abroad. Students belonging to minority communities do not get this kind of benefits from any government scheme. Also, there is no reservation for students from minority communities in education and employment. As a result, most of the students are deprived of education and development. There is a feeling in the society that injustice is being done to the students and youths of the minority community,” he wrote.
“Therefore, on the lines of SARTHI, BARTI, MAHAJYOTI and AMRUT, ‘Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Research, Training and Human Development Institute’ should be established, and students from minority communities should be given an opportunity to enter the mainstream of development,” he added.
