The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) Monday declared the Class 12 examination (HSC) results, recording a pass percentage of 91.88, a slight decline from 93.37 per cent in 2024.

While Science and Commerce streams maintained steady performance, the Arts stream experienced a notable drop of over 5 percentage points compared to last year.

In a year marked by stricter exam protocols, fewer top scorers emerged, and for the first time in recent years, no student secured a perfect 100 per cent.

Despite these changes, officials say the overall performance remains consistent with past trends. Last year, there was one student from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar who had scored 100 per cent.

The number of students scoring 90 per cent and above has also dropped marginally. A total of 8,352 students scored above 90 per cent this year whereas last year there were 8,782 students in this bracket, which was a considerable jump then from only 7,696 students in this category in 2023.

While some attribute this to strict anti-copy measures implemented in state for board exams, according to the Maharashtra State Board, this drop is insignificant.

Chairman of Maharashtra State Board, Sharad Gosavi, said, “With just 1.49 per cent, this is a very minimal drop. In fact, the HSC exam held in March 2023 had a recorded pass percentage of 91.25 which indicates that with a marginal gap, the result remains in a similar bracket this year too.”

This year’s HSC exam was held for a total 154 subjects and out of these 37 subjects have recorded pass percentage of 100.

Stream-wise comparison of pass percentage shows that Arts stream has witnessed a significant drop in pass percentage, as opposed to Science and Commerce.

While Arts stream has seen a drop by more than 5 percentage points in overall pass percentage, compared to last year, in Science and Commerce, HSC 2025 recorded a pass percentage of 97.35 and 92.68 respectively; which is similar to that of last year’s with marginal difference.

Sangeeta Kamat, Vice- Principal of Ramnivas Ruia Junior College, said, “It is not easy to score in Arts, particularly because it requires a lot of application-based knowledge. The answers too are majorly subjective in nature. Furthermore, there are already few colleges for Arts and among those there are fewer with students who genuinely have interest in pursuing Arts for education.”

Whereas Principal of St. Xavier’s College, Dr. Rajesh Shinde said that Arts has overall taken a hit in demand from students too, due to growing preference for Commerce and Science.

“Many junior colleges have started offering subjects like Psychology and Economics in Science stream. These subjects have been popular among Arts, but by studying those in science stream, students have more options for higher education.”

As many 14,27,085 students registered for the exam which was held between February 11 and March 11. Out of the total 14,17,969 students appeared for the exam, 13,02,873 passed it.

Like in previous years, girls with pass percentage of 94.58 have done better than boys who have recorded pass percentage of 89.51. A total of 20,943 students have received additional marks for showing excellence in Sports or Scout and Guide activities.
