Focusing on river rehabilitation and sustainability on World River Day, the Maharashtra government on Sunday held ‘nadi pathshalas’(river school) and a ‘river oath’ ceremony at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park to educate the public on the essential role rivers play in maintaining ecological balance.

The state government’s Tourism and Culture Department held a program at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park under the ‘Chala Januya Nadila’ (Let’s Know Our Rivers) campaign which is aimed at raising awareness on the importance of protecting rivers for a sustainable future.

The ‘Chala Januya Nadila’ campaign is part of the government’s broader efforts to rehabilitate Mumbai’s rivers, which have been severely impacted by pollution and encroachment.

Under the theme “Waterways for a Sustainable Future,” the program emphasised the need to safeguard rivers to ensure clean water for future generations and support biodiversity. Activities included a ‘river oath’ ceremony and a ‘nadi pathshala’ in the traditional “gurukul” style, both designed to bring awareness to the public on the importance of rivers.

The event saw participation from forest officers, environmental researchers, and students from several Mumbai colleges.

Nia Diwecha, a student from Mithibai College, expressed her appreciation for the initiative. “It feels good to be part of something that helps protect our rivers and environment. The river oath made me realize how small actions can lead to big changes if we all contribute.”
