Maharashtra downgrades security of several MLAs from Y to X category
According to the official, the decision was taken to ensure that "resources were deployed effectively".

The Maharashtra government downgraded the security cover of many politicians, including several MLAs of Deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and some from the BJP and NCP, and BCCI officials among others from “Y” and “Y-plus” categories to “X” category, a senior official said.
According to the official, the decision was taken to ensure that “resources were deployed effectively”.
Sources said that in a recent meeting of the Home department and other senior government officials, it was brought to the fore that in several cases, individuals who did not face any threats were provided “Y” category security, putting a burden on the department’s resources.
Those with “Y” category security have one Special Protection Officer with them and three guards outside their residence throughout the day. For this, the department has to provide eight personnel — four each in 12-hour shifts. In addition, the guards standing outside their residence carry arms and need a vehicle to reach the house with the firearms.
In comparison, someone in the “X” category is only provided two personnel — one each for a 12-hour shift.
“So downgrading security one level helps save six officials per protectee which at the level of the state comes upto a large number,” the official added.
