Emphasising the importance of adhering to Covid-appropriate behavior, Dr Sawant stressed the need to ramp up testing for suspected JN-1 cases, ensuring comprehensive examination and necessary treatment, said an official from the public health department.
The minister also indicated that a decision on forming a task force will be made after a week, following a thorough evaluation of the Covid-19 situation in the state.
Taking proactive measures to address any potential surge in JN-1 cases, Dr Sawant has directed the health department to conduct an intensive three-day mock drill in district hospitals. This drill aims to assess the preparedness and response capabilities of healthcare facilities across the state.
The meeting chaired by Dr Sawant was attended by Milind Mhaiskar, Additional Chief Secretary of the health department, Dheeraj Kumar, Commissioner and Director of National Health Mission, district collectors, chief executive officers of district councils, municipal commissioners and district health officers among others.
While acknowledging that the JN-1 variant may not pose an immediate threat, Dr Sawant urged health officials to remain vigilant and ensure all necessary preparations are in place. He cautioned against spreading unnecessary fear among people and emphasised the critical role of public awareness in controlling the situation.
The minister’s directives include, besides increased testing, visits to hospitals for assessment of preparedness. Ensuring the availability and functionality of critical medical resources such as ventilators, oxygen and ICU facilities is paramount, according to the minister. Inspections and the creation of informative videos to update senior officials are also part of the comprehensive approach.
