(Express archive photo/ Sankhadeep Banerjee)Raising questions over Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ claim of delivering “clean governance” in Maharashtra, the Opposition on Sunday slammed the ruling Mahayuti over law and order in the state. The Opposition highlighted incidents of atrocities against women, protection to ministers despite being convicted, and failure to deliver justice in the murder case of Massajog village sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, where an NCP minister’s close aide is under arrest.
Boycotting the customary tea-party organised by the state government on the eve of the Budget Session of the state legislature, the three Opposition parties of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) — Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP) and the Congress — questioned lack of communication from the government, alleging dictatorial behaviour from the ruling side.
“Those who faced allegations of having ties with (gangster) Iqbal Mirchi are now part of the government. The state cabinet has a minister whose close aide is linked to a murder. Another minister is convicted of robbing houses of poor people. The Union minister is seeking help to ensure the arrest of goons who harassed her daughter. Is this the clean governance we were promised about? Or daag achhe hai (stains are good),” asked Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA and
former minister Aaditya Thackeray.
Thackeray pointed out that stays given by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to various projects from the previous government, shows that “there was something fishy”.
Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad said that the boss of Walmik Karad, who is arrested in a case linked to the murder of Santosh Deshmukh, is Dhananjay Munde.
“He remains in the cabinet. Another minister Manikrao Kokate has been convicted by the court. Still he remains in the cabinet. The government has no intention of delivering a clean governance neither does it intend to follow the principles of democracy by establishing the communication with the Opposition,” he said.
Senior Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap pointed out that the schemes announced by the previous government are being closed down, including cutting the beneficiaries under the CM Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme.
“The government is planning to present its Budget in this session. But it seems that it is running out of money to present that Budget and therefore all the promises made before elections are being withdrawn,” Jagtap alleged.
The three opposition parties of Congress, NCP (SP) and Sena UBT wrote a letter to Fadnavis warning that the
government must be ready with all the answers in the upcoming budget session.
“It is not about a particular opposition party or a leader. The people of this state are seeking answers from the government and therefore we will be raising the people’s voice in the Assembly,” said Thackeray.
