Maharashtra BJP warns leaders against posters and comments targeting CM Shinde, his party

The warning came on a day when a BJP banner in Ulhasnagar appeared to belittle its alliance partner.

As a poster war has been raging between the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena over the past three days, Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule has strictly warned leaders of his party not to make adverse comments or put up posters against the alliance partner.

“It is now a closed chapter. I have instructed party workers not to put out any posters or make adverse comments against our alliance partner,” Bawankule said Thursday, referring to the controversy triggered by a government ad that failed to feature Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Chief Minister Shinde.

Bawankule’s comments came on a day when a banner was put up in Ulhasnagar in Thane saying, “Where is 50? And where is 105? It is the large-heartedness of the BJP. The name Devendra Fadnavis itself is enough”.

And a huge poster outside the BJP headquarters showed Fadnavis with raised hands. It contained lines written by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, “Sabal bhujavo mein rakshit hain nauka ki partwar; chir chale sagar ki chati, paar karen mazdaar (The boat is in safe and powerful hands, it is cruising through ocean, ensuring it reaches its destination safely)”.

On Wednesday BJP Rajya Sabha MP Anil Bonde said, “A frog can never become an elephant.”

Underplaying the bitterness stemming from the ad row, Bawankule said, “CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are both mature and experienced leaders. We have decided to move ahead together. We don’t see any problem with our alliance partner.”

“As far as seat-sharing between the Shiv Sena and the BJP for the 2024 elections is concerned, it will be mutually decided by Shinde and Fadnavis. Our central leaders and parliamentary board will decide it,” he said. “Under Shinde and Fadnavis, we have had good governance in Maharashtra.”

The state BJP president also said that the ruling alliance was strong and intact. On the other hand, he said the Congress, NCP and the Shiv Sena (UBT) would not remain together because they did not share a common ideology. “Even the Congress and the NCP are ideologically not together. Had they shared the same ideology, why did Sharad Pawar form the NCP?” he said.

As the Congress led the charge against the Centre’s move to seek feedback on a uniform civil code, Bawankule said the BJP believed there should be uniform laws for every citizen irrespective of caste, community and religion, adding that the party would fulfil its election promise of implementing the code.

“The 22nd Law Commission of India has decided to solicit views and suggestions and objections from citizens, religious groups and various organisations on the UCC within 30 days. Therefore, citizens should participate,” he said.

Bawankule also said that the BJP had fulfilled its promises to scrap Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and to build a Ram temple at Ayodhya.
