Taking the first step towards the mega restoration work of the Banganga Tank, Mumbai Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha on Monday performed the bhoomi poojan of the project.

Located in Walkeshwar at the upscale Malabar Hill neighborhood, Banganga is a rectangular step-water tank, dating back to the 12th century. This tank is being recognised and protected as a heritage site by the Maharashtra Archaeological Department. However, the tank has been in a poor condition for several years due to poor management.

Earlier this year, BMC proposed to give it a facelift to restore the heritage of the place. The project has been bifurcated into two parts and Lodha, during the bhoomi poojan ceremony, said that the main road adjoining the tank will be developed as a Bhakti Marg.

In the first phase, the stone steps in the pond will be repaired along with a circular road in the periphery. The BMC will develop this 18-metre wide circular road adjoining the tank and name it “Bhakti Marg”.

Civic officials said that the lake area will be illuminated by setting up electric poles and an arrangement of light and sound shows will also be made in the first phase.

In the second phase, murals will be created and all the stone pathways leading to the lake will be reconstructed. In the second phase, the Ram-Kund, which is another natural tank located within 200 metres from the Banganga, will be reconstructed.

The BMC will set up kiosks that would give out the history of this place and also propose creating an amphitheater along with seating arrangements for visitors.
