Three unidentified assailants allegedly shot a labourer and injured another in Uran on Monday evening. Thirty-five-year-old Santosh Thakur, who worked with a company in Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, and his mechanic friend Rashid Umar Umaji were hit by bullets when they were sitting in front of a garage in Uran.

While Thakur died at the spot,Umaji is undergoing treatment for a bullet injury in his thigh.

“Around 6 pm on Monday,Thakur and Umaji (40) were sitting outside the garage where Umaji worked as a battery repair mechanic. Three men on a motorbike approached and opened fire at the duo. While the rider remained seated, the other two got down and walked up to the duo and fired at them. Three bullets hit Thakur killing him at the spot and one hit Umaji in the leg,” said senior police inspector R K Kothawale of Uran police station.

“We suspect personal enmity to be the reason behind the attack. Thakur worked in a Piano company in JNPT and had few enemies. We are also questioning the other employees at JNPT and have got certain leads and will be able to nab the accused soon,” said Kothawale.
